Farm to Fridge: Shopping Local

In an effort to support local producers instead of the Safeway down the street the bf and I made a trip to Butler's Orchard in Germantown, MD this weekend. At Butler's you can pick your own fruit so we grabbed some cartons and loaded up on blackberries. There were so many berries ripening in the sunshine since it's still early in the season. We also bought fresh peaches, corn, squash and watermelon. It might just be psychological but I feel so much better buying food from Butler's and the farmer's market-- I actually want to spend time in the kitchen now! Anyone else with me on this?

  1. I love Butler's! It's also fun to pick pumpkins there in the fall.

  3. Totally with you! I get fruits and veggies from a CSA every week and grow a little garden in the backyard. Everything tastes so fresh! I've also been getting local, hormone-free milk from the farmers market and it's so delicious.

  5. I went to a different small local farm market last week...It was really nice to meet the people that grow the goods personally.

  6. Our neighborhood has a farmer's market every Friday where we buy all of our produce for the week. It's fresh and delicious, and we know we're supporting our neighbors - that's the best part!

  7. I've always wanted to pick my own fruit!

My husband and I love spending Saturdays wandering farmer's markets, and then it's fun to find recipes that work with the veggies you find.

  9. I LOVE buying locally grown food. We live right around the corner from our town's farmers' market, which is open year-round, so that makes it even easier. This year we also signed up for two CSA's, one for produce and one for flowers (a sweet anniversary gift!), which have both been amazing. I haven't been to a 'pick-your-own' place in awhile, though, so I should add that to my summer to do list!
